The Illusion of Control

I think we have as much control as being strapped into a big roller coaster going at full speed and wondering when the ride will end—enduring the dips and curves and loop de loops. Our hair is blowing in our eyes, we can’t see clearly, and our sunglasses are flying off our face somewhere into coaster land. And then we do it again. I think as souls—we do this too. But, just like the roller-coaster ride—we really don’t have control when we climb aboard, and the control master pushes the red button “GO”.

Instead, of a roller-coaster car and track, we are run by our filters, our subconscious, previous life experiences, the blueprint for our life and infinite potentials—all set to make it a very memorable ride. Do you remember reading the fine print? lol I certainly don’t!

I recently worked with a young woman who wore herself out by trying to control everything, anticipating and projecting her worries on to all around her in the name of love. Wow—that wore me out to even think about the responsibility and how that must feel. (Big sigh and deep breath moment!)

In fact, there are too many moving parts to anticipate every move in our lives. I needed to ask the question—what would happen if we just thought about what we wanted to create, and not worry about the next ten steps or the details of HOW? What if we could believe we were on a treasure hunt—and all we needed was to find the next (cosmic) invisible breadcrumb or hint, clue, or puzzle piece? And, what if we could just allow everything to organically unfold? Wouldn’t the journey be so much easier?

We need to trust the process. We must give allowance for the Universe to guide us. After all, maybe there’s a better plan or path that we haven’t even thought of or hasn’t come into view—but we’re already making plans—inked in our day planner—with no movement or options for anything else, and then disappointed when our plan doesn’t work?

We are made up of multidimensional energies—including something called a “higher-self”, which is a bridge between us and our complete soul energy on the other side of the veil. We are nudged and pushed—and have many choices—some easier and some more difficult, based on our perception of things. And an indicator of where we are; NONE of them right or wrong, and perhaps even waiting to be changed. How’s that for not knowing? It just is—for if we are eternal and forever—we have all the time in the world—to get it “right”.

Entertaining these thoughts—certainly relieves a lot of pressure. We are on a path of discovery—perhaps the most important is realizing we are just a small piece of the puzzle—with a lot of moving parts. We don’t need to know everything to make life glide along. And perhaps the biggest paradox of all is the less we try to control things, the easier we flow in the river of life, creating everything we need in the moment through synchronicity or the coincidental occurrence of events that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality. Everything works and aligns correctly and with precision. That’s the magic of letting go. Sometimes, we just need to surrender and sit in the passenger’s seat and enjoy the ride, the Universe has our backs!

“The reward is not at the peak toward which one strives.

It is the here and now. Wake up to the gift of the present.”
