A look “behind the scenes” – Juicings’ magical phytonutrients

Firing up my juicer once again, I have begun to explore new recipes. This is a delicious apple-beet juice with lemon, pear and ginger that comes out of a juicing book by Pat Crocker. I was giving a “Sugar Blues” talk at the Hollywood Healing Center and wanted the refreshments to reflect and represent alternatives to the usual fare of snacks. I share one today and give you a few behind the scenes look at the ingredients and what they offer our cells, tissues and well-being.  For those unfamiliar with the benefits of juicing it is certainly worth exploration.

Beet Juice Cocktail

Hippocrates: “Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

2 apples
1 pear
3 beets
1/2 lemon
1 – 1/2″ piece gingerroot

Put all ingredients through your juicer. Stir and pour into glasses and enjoy!

Did you know???  This is partial and abbreviated–just to give you an idea what a fresh-organic produce offers . . . who knew!

Beets: are antibacterial, antioxidant, cleansing. They strengthen and nourish the liver and gallbladder. They are an excellent source of potassium and are cleansing for the liver, kidneys and gallbladder.
Apples:  are a tonic, digestive, diuretic, detoxifying, cholesterol lowering, anti rheumatic, and liver stimulant. Fresh apples help to cleanse the system, lower blood cholesterol levels. They help to eliminate toxins and are a good source of vitamin A, B, C riboflavin as well as the phytochemicals pectin and boron.
Lemon: this small yellow fruit is amazing. To name a few benefits consider they aid in digestion, act as a laxative and diuretic. They have both antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Lemons support liver function improve the absorption of minerals, cleanse the blood and are useful in treating high blood pressure.
Ginger: contained in half of all Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines, they were listed as a taxable commodity by the Romans in 200 A.D. How can you begin to incorporate ginger into your modern lifestyle? Ginger is great for nausea. It relieves headaches and arthritis as it is an anti-inflammatory and circulatory stimulant. By increasing circulation, it helps effect a systemic cleansing through the skin, bowels, and kidneys. It also destroys many internal parasites and helps to normalize blood pressure.
Pears: used to energize the stomach, spleen and lungs. The pear is used in the treatment of diabetes, hot cough, gallbladder obstruction and constipation. The pectin in pears reduces serum cholesterol and cleanses the body of environmental and radioactive toxins.

Just as this recipe and these fruits and veggies contain many micro-nutrients that the causal observer  fails to notice on first glance, and that I might add are not contained in a particular supplement, whole food nutrition will bring benefits beyond what we think we know about eating healthy.  Each recipe and fruit delivers nutritional benefits in the way nothing else can. Our body and its innate wisdom together with Mother Natures innate wisdom provide a much higher vibration for our body than the man-made manufactured “educated” guess that selectively segments one or two nutrients and calls it the next great miracle.  Isn’t time we get back to basics? To me they work in such a way to create the symphony and composition of total health and wellness; one that we cannot possible out guess! There seems to be no short-cuts and no magic pill!  See if you can begin to open your mind to the possibility of fresh juicing and take your health to the next level!

Be well!

Turkish Tacos

Falafel with salad--dinner!

Falafel with salad–dinner!

Travel around the world without leaving home tonight for dinner. I prepare this at least once a month and am surprised when it is a new experience for my guests. It is satisfying for meat eaters and pleases the vegetarians alike.
It’s sort of like eating a taco from Turkey, only instead of ground beef or shredded chicken as the major ingredient, it is chickpeas, a.k.a. garbanzo beans. (I know falafel is certainly something odd sounding and foreign, probably where guacamole was 30+ years ago.) Isn’t it nice to grow and discover new cuisines and dishes!

For those who enjoy history, these ancient legumes date back from Turkey to somewhere around 7,000 B.C. They are a nutrient-dense food and are high in protein, fiber and other nutrients without offering a lot of calories.

This dinner makes a great alternative to the regular fare, and I find it also fun. We’re allowed fun for dinner–right? You can serve this in pita or flat bread and garnish with diced cucumber, tomatoes, chopped parsley or cilantro, hummus and/or tahini. A green salad or quinoa salad makes a fine accompaniment. Or as in the photo, make a great dinner salad and include the falalfel in any capacity you choose. Be creative –drizzle tahini and fresh lemon for dressing. (Or dip them in the tahine, the traditional sesame-seed topping.) The most important ingredient is love. I buy the falafel mix–easy, quick and fresh tasting. Please do remember to fry them in grape seed oil as it is able to withstand the heat without damaging your health. Another time saver is to use a small cookie size scoop with the squeeze-action handles!!

If I Could See Something What Would it Be?

” Know Nothing, Access everything, Get out-of-the-way.” A conversation with Universal Consciousness. “No-thing” means ALL. Profound thoughts! For the last five days I attended and completed Richard Bartlett’s workshop levels 1, 2, and 3 learning about what he calls Matrix Energetics. This workshop examines what we observe beyond our physical senses based on our filtered perceptions, memes and morphic fields. What do we really know? Our left brain is constantly trying to sort and make sense of our world. But what if we could move beyond consciousness of what we think we know? His information is based on science, and the body’s own subtle energy and his gift for magic and miracles. It is cutting edge healing and transformation at its best, and it is based on pure intent and the heart field electromagnetic energy. Here one must move from the head to heart. After all, the Heart is 5000 x’s more powerful than the head/brain.
In the room were 200+ people–including physicians, construction principles and healers all learning about accessing the unlimited zero-point energy field and the unlimited energy of the universe. For in reality, problems are only patterns and when we learn to play and unravel those patterns, new patterns of information can manifest through an infinite range of possibilities available to us all. In the end, coherence is only beliefs, opinions and thoughts. And, as Richard says, it’s the space between the space where miracles occur.

Spring cleaning; How does that look for you?

Beginning signs of springtime--

On March 20th the sun shines directly on the equator and the night and day are nearly exactly the same in length–12 hours–all over the world; the spring equinox. For us another season.  Spring or springtime is known as a time of renewal, rejuvenation and rebirth.

For some it may mean melting snow and softer breezes or noticing the beauty of the first spring flowers;  crocuses, daffodils or tulips as they merge from their hibernation. Each culture and region have their own customs and their own reminders.

For me it is the inspiration of opening up my home and shaking out the dust–maybe a bit metaphorically now since South Florida is where I live, but a shift is definitely in the air and certainly can be felt on many levels.

Today, I am starting to think about new recipes and new tastes reflected in my choices to eat–about my yearning and desire for new seasonal foods.  I have begun juicing and detoxing rituals. As the cooler weather waves good-bye, I find myself anxious to fire up my Vitamix and begin to make my trade-mark green shakes which I graciously offer to share with all who walk through my kitchen door. Somehow, my body’s innate intelligence seems to know this as I begin to think about foods that I have not really had a desire for in months.

Our ancestors ate seasonally because they had no other options. Newly sprouted greens came up in the spring, fruit ripened in summer, root vegetables sustained them in the fall and animal sources got them through the winter. Alkaline food makes the body detox. How wonderful that nature provides this naturally–leafy greens, berries, cherries, grapefruits, asparagus, spinach, and dandelion greens or wheatgrass come to mind, to cleanse the body from the heavier foods we have enjoyed throughout the colder winter months and that were needed for our survival.

What is your ritual? Are you craving something new? Is it time to begin to detox our systems–flooding our cells with fresh green juices? How can we begin to live in harmony with the natural cycles? Is it a great excuse to try a new way of doing something–perhaps buying local produce from a farmers market once a week?  Maybe it is a “Food upgrade”? Choosing less chemicalized, processed, packaged or drive-through meals?  Whatever you chose, think of the rebirth and renewal of yourself–your cells.  Honor yourself and live in harmony with your body and Mother Earth–treat yourself to the best food you can afford because in the end as Jim Rohn says, “It’s the only place you have to live.”

Maybe a Kitchen Herb Garden would fit you?

In Love and Light,

Cathy

Opening the Window

A metaphor for "life"?

A metaphor for “life”?

My friend Debbie opened the champagne; a bottle left over from her birthday. We were going to eat out, but I had all the makings of dinner. Around her dining room table, and over my simple grilled steak and sweet tomato salad, we seemed to naturally float into the world of “no time”. Our conversation spawn over many topics, all substantially of depth: divorce, death, kids, love life, and mysteries of the universe that included questions surrounding astrology, soul relationships and Akashic records.
She drew a book from her library. Write about this she proclaimed and read aloud: ” Two common misconceptions are that peace is a calm, placid state with little feeling and that intense feelings are not spiritual.” Debbie continued, “these misconceptions have nearly succeeded in killing us. . . Intense emotions are a natural part of life and the emotional body must vibrate to live. Strong emotions, both good and bad, create the vibration which allows us to connect with Source of energy, love and salvation. Fervent anger can be a powerful motivator for social change. Jealousy is a secret message, exposing unworthiness. Hurt feelings are the unacceptable parts of us, calling for love and illumination.”*

I nodded. I had spent a lot of time reflecting and questioning the ok-ness and appropriateness of just such topics and reactions both in the world of personal transformation and spirituality. The topic seemed even more important as we have moved into the new energy and new paradigm model.

Authenticity for me meant dropping the old that no longer serves and truly heal those parts of us that have been stuffed and stored down deep within our psyche; the illusion that they have been locked safely away in some vast storage unit. Not realizing that they are triggered when the monthly, quarterly or annual statement arrives and we are forced to write a check triggering off a cascade of feelings and emotions that have nothing to do with our current circumstance or event that sends us off crying, mad, hurt or in anger. On the extreme end, I see it as road rage, domestic violence and abuse–on the other end I see it as unhealthy relationships, passionless careers, addictions or self-defeating behaviors reflected in things like our food choices and eating patterns. All somehow related?

My childhood home was oftentimes filled with such confusion. The unspoken undercurrent and unhappiness loomed. We were not allowed to voice our displeasure or disagreement. There was no healthy way to communicate verbally. My Mother would often run to her room and slam the door. The harder the slam, the angrier she was. My Father never said a word or raised his voice. Only years later did I find poetry was his escape; unconsciously drawn to deal with this own pain–finding some relief as he wrote words on a yellow legal pads, paper napkins or crinkled envelopes. These learned dysfunctional behaviors, habits and beliefs I notice perpetuate in our family today among my siblings; sighting the elephant in the room is easy. Can we talk? I see it woven in the tapestry–on the other side, my ex-husband’s Jewish roots brought hot-blooded exchanges. That didn’t work so well either!

So, how do we learn to love ourselves and gain courage to move through the hurts and beliefs to neutrality where we are no longer so affected and able to face the fears directly? I suppose that is the million dollar question. I know that pretending these feelings do not exist does not work. It is not authentic or loving, and leads to our dis-ease and depression–heart attacks and cancer. Just pick up a copy of Louise Hay’s book, “You can heal your life” notice each label.
I know there are no magic bullets or wizard’s wands. It takes real work. Accept what isn’t working. Make a commitment to yourself. Ask for help. The answer lies within. Are we willing and open for the answer? Find a safe place or trusted friend. Remember, we always have choice. We always have the power and freedom to write a new story. The very appropriate metaphor of placing our mask over our nose first, before we can help others is important. By living our truth our way, we begin depositing rather than withdrawing from our emotional bank account. Once we examine our beliefs and take responsibility for our actions, and thoughts does it become possible to live in joy, peace, happiness and love. It is ours for the asking and willingness to walk through another doorway. Then old triggers become less and less like hurricanes; rather like breezes through your open window. Our new higher vibration will guide us closer to our true nature. What will we chose today? Each moment is a new opportunity!
“Not until the pain of the same is greater than the pain of change will you embrace change.”

-Dave Ramsey

The journey is the reward!

Be well–in love and light,

Cathy

Old vs. New Consciousness; Happening Right Before Our Very Eyes!

Who would have thought innocent cats would have been at the center of such controversy. This 12-12-12 shift continues to be more and more visible. (It shows up in subtle ways in each of our lives.) I add and share this story to dispel the fear surrounding this consciousness shift. You decide as you read the dispute below–about the cats! Meow! Who has taken the more astute approach? Living in the harmony of love and the collective–or the life and position of hate and fear? This drama is unfolding in the city of Delray Beach, Florida, between a woman and her landlord. . . This is the darkness that is being exposed; the light is shinning bright! It was broadcast on a local TV Station . . .

“Astoundingly in the news report Tom admits he has no clue as to what Lisa does in the Tent, thou he alludes to some mythic aspect of cats being a disease vector to pregnant women…it was picked up by local TV news . . . Darkness cannot hide!

http://www.wpbf.com/news/south-florida/Palm-Beach-County-News/Businesswoman-faces-eviction-after-feeding-feral-cats/-/8815578/17684694/-/ups27s/-/index.html

Businesswoman faces eviction after feeding feral cats; Landlord claims nuisance, denies trapping cats.

Some Sample Comments:

Arin Ashlar Tiki Man • West Palm Beach, Florida

All prospective and current business owners and land owners should boycott working with Tom Worrell. The man is a heartless moron. To Lisa: trap them all yourself asap and relocate them to a safe colony before this evil jack8ss kills more innocent cats and spews more ridiculous misinformation about health hazards. Also, you should be happy to move your business somewhere where you will not be paying this guy a red cent.

Shelly Miller
The landlord is an ignorant, cold-hearted fool. It’s a crime? The cats are spreading diseases?? He really made an idiot out of himself in this video.

Sue Gibson Feral cats are found in many South Florida communities! There are humane and responsible protocols to promote public health and manage the cats, and people to help, and then there are IMHO ignorant people like the property manager in this video. What is ridiculous is that happy, safe cats were killed, personal pets could be threatened, an entrepreneur faces losing her business, and someone looks like an idiot.
Dee Martin • Graphic Artist at World Media Enterprises
How very sad. Lisa, thank you for everything you have done to help the cats. Many blessings to you…I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. The community at large needs to be educated about ferals. The vacuum effect is real and there will be another colony taking over that territory. Killing is not the answer. Education and spay/neuter is the answer. I fully support TNR. Stay strong.

A. R. Henry
Tom Worrell has a heart of ice. Anyone who works so dilligently to harm cats will get theirs. I hope Lisa Kelly is vindicated, and finds a more receptive landlord and tenancy. She is more consciencious and considerate than some people who try to help cats. Worrell is the nuisance.

Ossie Sharon • Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
This landlord is evil, pure evil. Clearly the last thing about which he is concerned is “health”. I agree he should be charged for trapping and killing the cats, and hope Ms. Kelly finds enough supporters to sue him into a feral life on the streets.

Cathy

Nutrition: It’s Many Levels and Layers

Headed to New York City last week, I ponder why nutrition doesn’t hold the same fascination for others as it does for me? And why as a nation can’t we lead and set an example for the world in health; we sadly lag behind. Sickness seems to be our motto. I only need to eavesdrop on the conversation at dinner earlier in the week as two women talked about double knee replacements and leg braces and a close college friend undergoing round after round of chemo. We have excellent diagnosticians but little acknowledgement as to how we arrived here and very little discussion of prevention and self-healing. We have become a society that thwarts personal responsibility & insists on Instant gratification; please pass me a purple pill. Do we dare ask, ‘what just happened?’ (Almost like Dorothy landing in Oz and wanting to get back home.) And, just like Dorothy, are we finally discovering, we already have the answer and power, or is our obsession, like the wicked witch, just a symptom of a larger looming disguise and denial on our true state of mind, snowballed by chemicals, trans-fats, preservatives, ‘energy’ drinks, GMO’s and poor self-serving decisions by special interests everywhere we turn? Can we get back to ‘real food’ and honest nutrition? I absorbed much this past weekend as I listened over Saturday and Sunday; more of what makes our lives better and what IIN calls primary and secondary food. We as a nation made big strides against the tobacco industry–the troops are lining up to shed some light on what we eat and how our lifestyle affects our well-being.  Stay tuned . . . more to come, and it’s all good!

HEALTH TIP:
Be a food detective for yourself and your family. READ LABELS. Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated ANYTHING is pure poison to our body and our well-being. Look for it! This trans-fat is used solely to prolong shelf life of products sold, but not our life or our best interest! Even if the label states 0 trans fat in the upper-part of the label, you must read the ingredients list below. (If a product “contains less than 500 mg PER SERVING SIZE” manufacturers are allowed to list “Trans Fat/Grams Trans Zero 0g”. BUYER BEWARE!

Be Well,

Cathy

Fighting the Urge

Healthy Lunch at Caffe Martier, Delray Beach

Enjoy the Goodness!

And Finding a Good Alternative! Driving along I-95 I resisted the urge to succumb to the posted fast food eateries: McDonalds, Burger King, Cracker Barrel, Taco Bell.  You know the big blue highway signs.  How easy they make the temptation to fill our stomachs in a moment of convenience lured by price and speed.  Today, however, I persisted (which I admit took some courage) to navigate an unfamiliar town, parking and weather uncertainty. The reward was a discovery of a small Cafe with a selection of beautiful healthy salads and a moment to myself.  Sitting at a small round table on the sidewalk outside the cafe, enjoying my lunch thinking that it is the simple things in life that are the things we so often forget to celebrate.  I invite you to do the same! Take a moment to stop and taste the goodness.

GOOD EATS:

Turkey, Avocado & Brie Salad: Off the bone turkey breast, fresh cut tomatoes, grilled red onions on a bed of mixed greens topped with avocado, Brie, and drizzled balsamic vinaigrette. Served with fresh toasted baguette.
A healthy choice because:
*Fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains are the healthiest foods you can consume.
      * Raw foods are hydrating & detoxifying.
*Fruits cleanse cells and greens build cells.
