(Part I) Emotions Affect Our Health and Our Path to Healing; 7 Ways to Help!

"Embrace all Emotions" --Buddha

“Embrace all Emotions”
–Buddha

By finding this blog, you have acknowledged on some level that you are ready for something bigger—the next step to taking control of your health or dis-ease. Isn’t it wonderful to know that if we co-create our condition—we have the power to co-create our health and wellness also?
I have been attending the University of Miami Clinical Nutrition series, and participated in a group sharing circle last Saturday. We batted around IgA function, food allergies/sensitivities and other more traditional thoughts about patient care and disease. But, when I raised my hand to suggest about asking what else might be going on (at an emotional level) in the patients’ life—I was met with silence.
This morning I had conversation, with a dear friend, in reference to her mother’s diabetes.  She replied, Mom always seems so happy and positive–but has she dealt with her pain and disappointments?  Diabetes is about longing for what might have been.  A great need to control.  Deep sorrow–and no sweetness left.  Yes, there was certainly some of that.  Last week, a colleague apologized for her large pile of Kleenex, and allergies until I shared my experience about the hidden message our body tries to communicate to our conscious mind.  Allergies she read: Denying your own power.  Who are you allergic to? Her eyes met mine with OMG revelation. What about Marla’s emotional eating, Lucy’s migraines, Daniel’s depression and Andrew’s back? Also clues—you bet. This afternoon in a serendipitous discussion with an older woman, speaking of her husband and his illness, she confessed, “I don’t think he ever acknowledged his emotional issues.”
We need harmony within our system. There is an emotional component to our dis-ease; an ‘indicator’ we are not in balance; like the oil light in our car. I am not alone in this belief. This dialogue is simply a method to bring the energy to the surface and raise the collective consciousness—exposure—and create an even greater awareness to a larger “truth”; we cannot have lasting health until—our emotional, mental, and spiritual sides are acknowledged as part of the healing equation.
Visionary pioneer, Louise Hay has addressed the mental patterns of fear and anger in much of her work. In her book, You Can Heal Your Life. She writes, “Anger can show up as impatience, irritation, frustration, criticism, resentment, jealousy or bitterness. These are all the thoughts that poison the body. When we release this burden, all the organs in our body begin to function properly.” She continues, “fear can show up as tension, anxiety, nervousness, worry, doubt, insecurity, feeling not good enough, or unworthiness.” Isn’t it time to take this out of NEW AGE thinking and insert it into MAINSTREAM management? And, if mainstream, isn’t ready, why wait another 20 years for science to prove what innately we already know! The body communicates as a whole, each part connected to the other, in fact, communication flowing to every part of who we are. In her book, Your Body Speaks Your Mind, Deb Shapiro writes “the underlying psychological or emotional issues usually relate to the purpose or the function of the affected part. Unconsciously you are participating more than you realize.” When or what does it take to address these underlying causes so often discounted and dismissed? The choice is yours. Part of that illness maybe opening our hearts, and learning to connect with what is important in our lives; what is our true priority?
I know as part of my white bread culture—NOTHING was ever discussed growing up. How I felt about my grandmother’s death, my father being laid off by Boeing, my sister’s open heart surgery, my aunts cancer, my mother disdain for her in-laws (my grandparents) . . . and more recently my divorce several years back. All families come with issues; no one escapes these lessons. We all have a story. I have witnessed emotional breakdowns over loss, violence, sexual abuse, alcohol, drugs, and death to start. (And that doesn’t include the small stuff.) We’ve gotta start letting it out! Christiane Northrup, MD humorously points out and illustrates so colorfully when she asks: “What’s that over there in the corner? OMG, it’s a feeling; someone quickly, go stamp it out!

Next week: Seven steps that will help you . . . rooted in Universal knowledge and intuition. Smiling—Stay tuned! 

Anti-Aging and Healthful Benefits of Sex

Beautiful-Women-Over-502As two-50 something women, sex doesn’t particularly occupy headline news, but this weekend it became the topic du jour in a two hour phone conversation.   Products of our upbringing ‘Miss Manners Greenwich’ and ‘What would the neighbors think Seattle’ usually focus on other mind-bending metaphysical topics with the enthusiasm of professional power shoppers; esoteric inmost circles. (Smiling) I have been stretched over the years from not being able to mention S-E-X to conceding that, not only do I enjoy sex, but miss it when my life does not include such intimacy.

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines health as the complete mental, physical and social well-being and not just the absence of dis-ease and infirmity.  So, I guess that includes a healthy social life and good sex?  Nice to hear as the 60’s sexual revolution has long since passed, but paved the way for a more open point  of view,  changing belief and way-of-being in most contemporary circles.

Meaningful and loving sex actually helps to balance our body and can be a significant spiritual bridge and bonding between two souls.  Perhaps that is why, with the right partner, it feels so good—and satisfying—an acknowledgement from our higher-self, and simple nod of approval.  And, could this be some sort of unseen melding of our energies at the quantum and interdimensional space, outside of our time as we know and acknowledge.

Medical science may not be ready for spiritual bonding and quantum physics as it relates to sex, but what they do know is it makes your skin healthy and helps to keep us young.  According to naturopath Natasha Turner, N.D sex is anti-aging, immune-boosting and stress-reducing.  She reports:

1. It’s a natural pain reliever: Sex causes increased production of oxytocin, which is often referred to as the “love hormone”.  Before orgasm, oxytocin, released from the brain, surges up to five times the normal level. This increase then leads to the release of endorphins, our natural pain-killing hormones.

2. It’s a stress reliever: The endorphins released during sexual intercourse and orgasms are natural mood-boosters and stress relievers. Regular sex can also boost your self-esteem and increase intimacy between partners.

3. It boosts immunity: Endorphins released during intimacy have been found to stimulate immune system cells that fight disease.

4. It’s good for your heart: Intercourse, depending on your level of enthusiasm, can be considered aerobic exercise, burning up to 200 calories per session. Among other benefits, women who engage in regular sexual activity with their partners have higher levels of estrogen, which protects against heart disease. Research has found that men who have sex two times per week have fewer heart attacks than those who do not. The hormones released during sex cause an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and it engages almost every muscle in the body. After sex, blood vessels dilate and blood pressure is then reduced. This change in blood vessel constriction may also help with tension headaches.

5. It turns back the clock: A 2002 report from a large British population of men said researchers found a 50 percent reduction in overall mortality in the group of men who said they had the most orgasms. The Journal of the American Medical Association has also reported that “high ejaculation frequency was related to decreased risk of total prostate cancer.” Having regular orgasms can increase your life span. Every time you reach orgasm, the hormone DHEA increases in response to sexual excitement and orgasm. DHEA can boost your immune system, improve cognition, keep skin healthy, and even work as an antidepressant. Therefore, the added health benefit is that you will feel—and look—younger, longer.

6. It gives you a glow: The glow of good sex is real. Women who have more sex have higher levels of estrogen, which is essential to enjoying healthier, smoother skin. This increase in estrogen also helps to protect us from heart disease, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.  . It also promotes the production of collagen, which keeps the skin supple and gives you a healthy glow.

If your hormones have waned, and there is “no desire”, replacement bio-identical creams are an option to consider and will put you back in the game—helping that vibrant sexy woman to emerge once again.  The supplement DHEA, building block for cell regeneration, sex hormone function and cortisol-level balancing is also very helpful in some cases.   Gematria products are particularly powerful, and I have used them personally.  Of particular interest for me is their anti-aging line. Check out: www.gematria.com.  It is always wise to consult with your physician or qualified medical professional before taking these or any other supplements.

When You Just Don’t Feel Like Exercising . . .

Exercise, movement, physical activity or fitness. Whatever you choose to call it, some days are tougher than others.  Motivating ourselves to do the right thing can be a challenge some days. So, how do we get past our resistance?

First, acknowledge we all have days like this.  A spontaneous discussion after class with my yoga instructor last week revealed something similar: the exact same class, movement, and poses were easier some days than others for him. Lets call it human nature.  I don’t know if it is  tied to the moon, our bio-rhythms, stress or energy levels, but it’s important to find ways to get past it.

How do we convince ourselves to get moving when our job is weighing on our minds–our kids have soccer practice or we’re fighting a virus or boredom and the motivation that is usually there seems to have taken a leave of absence?

I share these thoughts as I fight to get out and do something; it is how I am feeling today.  I have a cold–nothing serious but my energy level is definitely waning. I’m afraid the cold is winning.  My friend Keary’s  kids have soccer practice and Wendy is frustrated with her latest job.  A common  scenario? Our reasons are all valid and convincing for not exercising.

I know I always feel better after my trip to the gym or a walk. The outdoors make me feel refreshed and renewed; especially this time a year in south Florida. The endorphins and the negative ions circulate wellness to my being.  I could choose to walk the treadmill or pedal the bike, a variation from my almost daily elliptical tete-a-tete.  What about a spontaneous dance or step class? What made me feel good as a kid? Could I get out on my bike, or jump in the pool for a swim? Maybe a reward? A feel good massage, a facial or another form of pampering? What about treating myself to a pedicure or a new spring work-out top?  A few sessions with a personal trainer, perhaps? My friend Debbie, suggests belly dancing! If  that sounds fun, let the inner-child out to play!  The reward is worth the fight.  Anything that can get us out of our routine and stimulate our desire and motivation encouraging  us towards some sort of daily fitness– does a body–and attitude good! But sometimes, it’s just nice knowing, we’re not alone!

Keary has decided to walk the grass soccer field while her kids run its length chasing that white and black ball. Wendy and I decide to go for a nice long walk. Debbie loves her tennis!   What will it be for you?

Moving into a New Energy – 2014

2014 Happy New Year

The past year of recalibration has concluded and we continue to slide quickly into 2014. Is it astute to ask:  What is the flavor to come?  A “seven-year” in the eyes of numerology means–one of divinity, perfection and wholeness.  So what does that really mean?I can’t say exactly how your world or for that matter my year will unfold, but what I am sure of, is, it all begins with intention. A declaration to ourselves and to the Universe that lovingly supports our growth and enlightenment–unfolding before our eyes–seen or unseen, our actions will support this unfoldment.
What about a year where we create wellness, vitality and a body of health?  And if so, what changes does that mean for you? I say it’s possible to use our intuition, not our intellect, on what our body needs–more greens, veggies, fresh fruit or water perhaps? A morning meditation? Or do we need more movement in our life such as a new exercise routine; something we love to do! What about healthy relationships and a career of passion?

Emotions are something we cannot afford to ignore!  Can we admit and recognize deep pains stuffed and stored in the recesses of our being, begging to be released once-and-for-all? We are supported on many layers–each building upon another by the larger intelligence to which we are all deeply connected. Our challenges differ slightly for each of us. But if we adopt a “whatever it takes attitude” to walk through our fears and trust what lies ahead on the other side will be a life of joy, compassion, acceptance, tolerance and our integrity for ourselves.  Truly able to be free and to celebrate us–our shining perfection– flaws and all!  Make your list with heartfelt intent and the synchronicity will follow. To a  Happy Healthy year of Wellness; let it begin now!

Bringing in More Light . . . Compassion Choir 2013

Creating a new reality? Rewriting the future? Singing tones to the Earth?
Opening time capsules?

It sounds like science fiction: Star Wars, Stargate, Star Trek or Deep Space Nine; creative imaginative writers working for some big Hollywood production studio. Right? Wrong. But, as you already know, truth is stranger than fiction.

Like iron filings to a magnate, I was drawn to and spent this past week in Cancun, Mexico toning sacred sounds in an ancient language: two choirs singing two different sets of tones paired together. We sang  twenty-six tones,  “speaking” to our personal DNA and activating time capsules within ourselves while simultaneously speaking to and unlocking  attributes for our beloved Mother Earth, activating things called grids, nulls, nodes and more time capsules–all quantum, put in place by the ancient Pleiadians, our long lost family, from the Seven Sisters should we make it this far—and we have!

All of this unlocked by a brilliant scientific visionary, Dr. Todd Ovokaitys, who served as the choir master 26,000 years ago in a civilization known as Lemruia.  Over the last dozen years he has remembered precise patterns to trigger the opening of our pineal glands, beginning to awaken and transform us– humanity– to a more compassionate race and sending information to the universes and galaxies beyond, tapping into a deep level of “quantum reality.”  These seen and unseen, male-female, inward-outward, giving-receiving, and compassion-allowing energies create a very real and profound experience recognized in our awareness or not. These tones mine information stored within our Akashic records, opening channels of telepathy, aiding in transformation without limits, activating the third eye and tying us into a quantum connection with All There Is.

Fascinating esoteric stuff–invisible–like gravity, magnetics or the feelings of love—but based in physics and way beyond my technical expertise. Yet it resonates as Truth for me and that is why I share it with you and why I spent this past week in Mexico with 300 others from around the world.  Everything is energy and “at the level of quantum understanding, everything in the Universe is simply waves and vibrations” including these rhythms, tones and sounds we generated together in a beautiful angelic chorus.

But, the bigger question is why? In a simple answer: Compassion. By singing and toning these unique sounds and patterns, the choir began to move humanity and birth our new reality; to help us become more astute and caring to each other no matter what corner of the world we live in. These are the beginning steps to a new foundation for humanity as we begin to move out of our current competitive dog-eat-dog fear-based world and into a world and new human consciousness that will embrace attributes such as: tolerance, temperance, generosity and integrity.

I share this vision of unlimited possibility and ask you to believe in a world of peace, love and compassion as the new structure unravels our past and the old crumbles giving way to this new outlook.  Look around and ask, Have we begun this shift? The answer is, yes. You can see glimpses as it begins to unfold—like a delicate flower opening before our very eyes. Perhaps as family members respect and honor the others’ opinions and ways of being for the first time–ever, or as simply a more cooperative spirit among your colleagues at work?  There will be a noticeable shift.  And, does it really matter how we get there? I think not, but one day we will all celebrate this new world together,  only remembering the dark barbaric ways of the past, and instead, seeing our magnificence. And that is a beautiful and divine place to be!

Thoughts on . . . Thanksgiving

Happy-ThanksgivingWhat is important to us? What’s really important? With the approaching holidays just around the bend–perhaps it is time to examine our priorities and lighten up? “Perfect” is only a state of mind; a belief. The perfect dinner. The perfect table. The perfect company. We put so much pressure on ourselves and others about what holidays HAVE to look like. Maybe we need more spontaneity and fun? Yes, the new “F” word: FUN.  Anyone who knows me, knows I like to cook, inviting others to enjoy a great meal–no matter what the occasion. But gone are the days when everything must be just so.  It is all about enjoying the moment.   I am giving you permission for the same!

When the fun is gone, the stress takes over. Is it time to re-create and unlearn how we believe the holidays must look? Can you be in the moment and enjoy the NOW—not worrying about the next leg of the modern-day relay race? Why not decide in advance how you can remove some of the pressure of the perfect “Hallmark” dinner. Maybe crazy cousin Eddy’s unexpected arrival is divinely designed to add the spark of humor and lightness that no one else brings? The dessert falling or the dog helping himself to the plate of appetizers will not be the end, but a memory everyone will remember and laugh about long after the wishbone from the turkey is snapped. It is the heart not the head that gets us into this feeling of love and love doesn’t care about perceptions –a wrinkled table cloth or chips in a couple of plates.  It directs you to what is real.

If it is easier to share the responsibility–or get the restaurant on the corner to do part of the cooking, so much the better. I know it looks different for every family. This year, is it possible to start a new tradition? Or UN-learn something? Perhaps, invite someone to your house who has no family near? Or choose to bury the hatchet with a relative over an argument you had that you can’t even remember what it was about? A potluck? A neighborhood Thanksgiving? A brunch or an open house? Or a different day; it is only a day on the calendar.

Whatever it is, make the declaration and set the intention to have fun. Attitude is everything. When the stress creeps in, don’t forget to exercise–even just a quick walk will make a difference. Trade an apple for a slice of apple pie. Visualize, meditate and keep a good attitude. It’s only dinner after-all!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Vitamin G: A Powerful Way to Start Everyday!

Gratitude-is-the-hearts-memory-a-French-proverb1Gratitude, another key to happiness and well-being. We all know this innately, but sometimes it’s like forgetting to put our napkin in our lap or turning off the light before we exit a room.
Gratitude is more than an intellectual exercise of just giving thanks or uttering the platitude, “I feel blessed today”. Not of course that those things aren’t true, but it is the ability to really feel this emotion.  When we drop into our heart we activate a consciousness and create a new reality ; this is where the magic happens!

I remember saying grace every evening at the dinner table growing up.  It was the prerequisite to beginning the family meal, and looking back, it felt more like sitting at a red light, waiting for the signal to turn green–and permission to GO. This morning, when I look around at all the hardship and  daily struggle, my gratitude extends to many things in my life; I note my beautiful home, my purposeful career, my friends–and family. My boys are good,  my health excellent–and my parents still alive in their 80’s.  And, although I am no longer 30, I have more life lessons under my belt.   I have more experience, wisdom and insight that melds with who I have become today.  I look forward to whatever the future brings.

So, gratitude for me is about really feeling it in my heart. It’s yours to own as well when we are able to get out of our head. The heart, is 5000 times more powerful than our left-brain intellect. The hearts mystery contains the powerful feminine-side of our emotions, feelings and love. It is the seed which is able to move mountains–that tiny seed when nurtured is able to grow through the toughest conditions.  It all begins with intention. Do we show love and have gratitude for our earth, the plants and animals–our forests and oceans and all the abundance contained therein?

I send the challenge out to you too: gratitude for 60 seconds today? And, if you are having a really “bad”day, can you think of just one thing–and then notice how you feel? What about one more? Better huh. On a good day these things are easy– but the power comes when we are challenged. So, what do you have gratitude for, and what does it feel like when we choose from our heart?  After all, recent studies indicate, about 40 percent of our own happiness is entirely within our control.  What if it was even higher than that?  100 percent?  Who knows?

A massage for our soul, certainly our mind, and also the place the seeds to health, and wellness are nurtured and grow.  And, by the way, gratitude and happiness include at wide range of health benefits for us including, less incidence of strokes.  We have better immunity against colds and flu.  We have less pain, lower cortisol levels, less stress and inflammation in our body. Like a beautiful garden, see what shows up in your life when the seeds of gratitude are planted! Better than any supplement. Happy is healthy. Have you had your energetic and transforming Vitamin G today?

Changes Deep Within Our Cells? You Decide!

Lightning_Bolt_by_UndeadSamurai01A meteorologist will profess thunder and lightning is simply the mixture of two fronts; warm and cool air colliding. Yet, is thunder and lightning a deeper message from Mother Nature and spirit? Is there a deeper meaning?  Does this effect our DNA in a quantum way? We are becoming very clear how vibration, sound and light therapy can be used in therapeutic ways. Could it be about cleansing and change? Does the earth respond to human consciousness and we to it? Do we respond to this intense energy at the level of our cells? Is energy the great equalizer–bringing things together, and taking them apart?  Could this intense energy be seen as the rector or tinker toy set in the universe? After all, trees, mountains, beaches–and cities may stand for centuries only to be changed in a single storm.

Way beyond our physical awareness of wind, clouds, lightening, thunder and pouring rain, is a storm–just a storm?  Are thunderstorms like dramatic performances? At at the conclusion we are forever altered? Some of us, I know, even taking our last breaths as the expressions we are, as our soul moves into another dimension and reality?

Most of us, just notice the rain. The downpour coming off the roof tops and splashing out of gutters, flooded streets and the speed of our wipers tracking across our windshields. We notice and acknowledge the intensity of the lightning. Often times, it has stopped me in my tracks as it shakes my home.  We may certainly call it  energy in its purest form. And if energy cannot be created or destroyed, what does it reshape? Listen to the thunder sometime–a cacophony of sounds.  But do we really understand its true meaning and purpose? Maybe someday we will! Thoughts to ponder.  But for me,  I will never look and listen at a thunderstorm with the same eyes and meaning again.

‘De-Stressing’ our Lives

Maybe a small Herb Garden would fit you?

Maybe a small Herb Garden would fit you?

I awoke this morning–my “to do” list seemed to grow overnight.  The last several weeks have been fraught with mechanical breakdowns; the aging air conditioner, my car battery, a cantankerous refrigerator, a hairline crack in my iPad, taxes, keeping my household’s daily maintenance and routine flowing as smoothly as possible–and  fulfilling my purposeful health coaching practice demands.  All good!  I reminded myself this week, there is no destination, yet the journey is at times challenging!

Each of us in our own way–on our own schedule is juggling  work, health, activities, relationships–and life.  So how do we “de-stress” our lives?  After all, stress is a big factor that contributes to dis-ease and illness.

I began my day, with good intentions, and a few minutes of quiet meditation.  Sunday, a wonderful yoga class offered at the gym and has quickly become a ‘new tradition’ over the past 12 months.  I look forward to the familiar melodious voice of the instructor as he drives the poses, stretches, and breathing.  Each minute that passes seems to pull the tension from the muscles and space within my body at some level of unconscious awareness.  Leaving class after the traditional “Namaste”, I always feel much lighter.  Ah, what great stress reliever.

Relieving stress is as important as organic food, positive thoughts, healthy careers, supportive relationships, creativity & sound home environments.  Each spoke on the wheel reinforcing the integrity of the hub–in this case–us.  Frequently and chronically we lead stressful, frenzied lives full of anxiety.  We all to often struggle to balance all of our roles and then wonder not only why we can’t do it all–but why happiness and joy seem to allude us as well.  The conundrum of modern life.  Where is the harmony? Perhaps, staying true to ourselves, accepting and enjoying the simple pleasures which create lasting happiness and realizing the craziness must take a backseat wherever possible!  Simplify.

How do you de-stress your life?  I’d love to hear.   I’ve come up with a few  suggestions that I offer you today.  See if any of these resonate with you.  For me, when things spiral upward, my reprieve is a few quiet moments sitting on the beach–listening and watching the waves.

  • Take a walk
  • Try a warm bubble bath
  • Choose healthy relationships that support you
  • Listen to music
  • Get creative; write, paint or draw
  • Try aromatherapy such as lavender oil
  • Make yourself a cup of chamomile tea
  • Take yourself to a “time-out” for 5 minutes peace
  • Start a small garden that gives you pleasure and gets you into nature
  • Prioritize and eliminate the non-essential.
  • Give yourself permission and know that most things can wait and the world will not fall apart if they don’t get done TODAY!
  • Laugh
  • Food affects our emotions and our mood; pick wisely.
  • Breathe
